What Can You Make With I-Cords?

If you've discovered the quiet satisfaction of making i-cord, you'll know how easy it is to end up with a small heap of them and absolutely no plan.

They're so enjoyable to make that the doing becomes the point β€” and then suddenly you have fifteen cords in various colours and nowhere for them to go.

Here are some of my favourite ways to use them up, from the practical to the purely decorative.

Decorative Uses

Embellishments

I-cords make lovely decorative trims on garments and accessories β€” they have just enough structure to sit neatly without adding bulk. Try using them to outline pockets, create little loops or bows, add contrast edging, or form simple appliquΓ© shapes. They're particularly good when you want something that looks considered without requiring hours of work.

Drawstrings and Ties

I-cord slides beautifully through eyelets and casings, which makes it ideal for hoodie drawstrings, bag closures, waist ties, and even curtain tie-backs. Easy to make to any length, and far nicer than the flat ribbon that came with the original.

Functional Uses

Straps and Handles

Because i-cord is so tightly constructed, it holds its shape well under moderate weight β€” making it surprisingly capable as bag handles, purse straps, and light tote handles. Don't underestimate the humble cord.

Key Fobs and Keychains

Short i-cords make wonderfully sturdy little key fobs. Add beads or charms, create a looped design, or attach a metal clip. They're lightweight, practical, and a lovely way to use up leftover yarn.

These were some of my very first β€” a little wonky, but I'm still fond of them.

Bookmarks

A slim i-cord makes a neat bookmark that sits flat without damaging pages β€” much kinder than a dog-eared corner. Add a small tassel, shape the end into a flower, or thread on a bead for a little weight. Simple and satisfying.

Wearable Projects

Jewellery

I-cords can be made into bracelets, necklaces, and headbands with very little fuss. Braid several together for more structure, or keep a single cord simple with a pretty clasp.

Hair Ties

I-cord hair ties are softer than standard elastic and can be made to suit different hair thicknesses. A small thing, but a thoughtful one.

Skinny Scarves and Belts

Using t-shirt yarn or a soft chunky yarn, you can create narrow scarves that layer easily over winter coats β€” very lane-appropriate, I think. Braided cords also make lovely simple belts that work well with dresses and skirts.

Home Projects

Coasters

Coil a flat i-cord into a circle and stitch it in place as you go β€” that's really all there is to it. Sturdy, washable, and easy to colour-coordinate with whatever corner of the house needs a little something.

Decorative Edging

I-cords can be hand-stitched onto cushions, blankets, and wall hangings to create a clean, finished edge. It's one of those touches that looks far more deliberate than it was.

A Final Thought

I-cords are one of those things that seem almost too simple β€” and then you realise how much they can do. Whether you're after something decorative or genuinely functional, they're a flexible little tool worth keeping in your repertoire.

If you're just starting out, I'd suggest a key fob or bookmark first. Small, quick, and very pleasing to finish.
